Distracted driving is a common cause of auto accidents. However, according to a new survey, Colorado drivers are more distracted than previous years. This can lead to dangerous roadways and injuries.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), a new survey revealed that nearly a quarter of Colorado drivers admitted to reading text messages, emails or social media posts while driving. In addition to the 22 percent of people who said they had read something on their phone while driving, the survey revealed that 15 percent of respondents said they had written something on their phone while behind the wheel, and more than 60 percent said they selected entertainment on their phones, radio or CD players while driving.
In 2015, there were 68 traffic deaths and more than 15,000 crashes involving a distracted driver in the state of Colorado alone. Despite these frightening statistics, Director of the Office of Transportation Safety at CDOT, Darrell Lingk, is confident that the new survey will help design and implement new traffic safety campaigns to address these kinds of dangerous behaviors.
