Denver Hail Damage Attorney

On May 8th of 2017, we experienced the most expensive hail storm in Denver’s history. In its wake, as claims began to compound, the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association (RMIIA) estimated the storm, which brought strong wind and hail to the entire Front Range, would end up costing insurance companies around $1.4 billion. This estimate included claims for 100,000 autos and 50,000 homes.

According to the Denver Post, that number has been increased by $900 million, equalling a new estimated total of $2.4 billion, making last years Metro Denver hail storm $1.3 billion more expensive than any other in the Mile High CIty’s history.

Included in the adjusted numbers are $8.73 million in auto insurance claims. The slow moving storm hit in mid-afternoon, when hundreds of thousands of cars were in parking lots or on the road and entirely vulnerable to the onslaught of hail and debris. Cities in the Northern portion of the Metro area, including Wheat Ridge, Lakewood, and Golden, were hit the hardest. Some hailstones in northwest Denver were reported as being the size of baseballs, smashing windows and mirrors, and mercilessly denting exposed vehicles while owners watched helplessly from the safety of buildings - although those were not safe either.

These same stones that destroyed vehicles caused $1.4 billion in home damage as well, primarily through the destruction of roof shingles, sheathing, and even rafters. The association did not include data from business insurance claims in its numbers, which would have easily seen them doubled.
