Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Hail Damage?

Colorado Hail Damage Lawyers

The “hail season” in Colorado runs from Mid-April through Mid-September with the biggest and most severe storms typically occurring in June and July. Within the past five years, Colorado has seen a number of devastating and damaging hail storms, resulting in millions of dollars in damages to cars, businesses, and homes – and while most insurance policies cover hail damage, not all insurance companies are quick to pay on claims involving it.

Dwelling Coverage

Dwelling coverage, which is a standard part of all homeowners’ insurance plans, covers the structure of your house. This includes the roof, walls, and anything else that makes up the physical home structure. These are the things most often damaged by hail.

Colorado currently boasts the largest hailstone ever. At 8.5 ounces and 4.85 inches, this stone is especially large, but not too much bigger than many of the stones that fell during the historic hailstorm of 2017. Doing $2.4 billion in damage, that May 8th hailstorm was the most damaging in our State’s history, three-times more expensive than any up to that point.

Some people are still waiting on payment from their insurance policies for roof repair and other structural damage that occurred during that storm. Others are awaiting payment for property damage that has occurred in storms since. These delays may be caused by any number of issues. They may also be a result of insurance bad faith.

What Are My Options?

If you have homeowners’ insurance and your property has been damaged by hail, it is almost certain that your policy provides coverage. You may have to pay a deductible, but hail damage is not uncommon and should not provide your insurer any reason to deny your claim. If you have submitted a hail damage claim and you are being ignored or otherwise treated unfairly, it may be time to consider legal assistance.
