Living in Colorado has an abundance of perks, not the least of which are those days that push into the 60s and 70s during what would traditionally be considered the coldest time of the year.
Denver enjoys an average of 300 sunny days every year. Many of those, even during January and February, come with temperatures in the high 50s and above. Providing streets are clear of ice and snow, these are ideal motorcycle riding conditions, but what are some good options for winter motorcycle rides in the Denver area?
Uncover Colorado, a popular travel website and blog based out of Denver, has recently published an article, “4 Winter Motorcycle Rides from Denver,” suggesting that four of the best metro-area motorcycle rides are:
- The Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Refuge
- Santa Fe through Sedalia
- 32nd through Golden
- Multiple winding roads to Boulder
These rides offer options for food and drink along the way, all detailed in the article linked above. Alternate routes and turnaround points are also provided in that article, making it a great resource for people interested in those particular rides.
In addition to the winter motorcycle rides listed above, a day trip up I-70 to Idaho Springs or Georgetown can be both exhilarating and rewarding. So too can rides along Highway 36 and Highway 7 heading towards Estes Park. Please remember that U.S. 34 is closed for the winter and will remain unpassable between Cedar Cove and Waltonia through most of May 2018. Riders along this stretch of highway will be diverted to County Road 43, which can prove fairly treacherous for motorcyclists during the winter.
It is also important to remember that the weather along the Front Range and the weather in the high country can be vastly different. It is not uncommon for temperatures to be in the mid-60s in the metro-area while whiteout conditions are occurring in the higher elevations. If you plan on heading into the mountains, particularly if your travels will take you to the Eisenhower Tunnel or over the Divide, it is advisable to check weather conditions before leaving in order to avoid an unpleasant and potentially deadly surprise.
Colorado Winter Motorcycle Riding Tips
Even on those warmer days, it is important to be prepared for winter weather if you choose to ride your motorcycle in Colorado during the wintertime. The Colorado Motorcycle Expo (formerly known as the Colorado Motorcycle Show & Swap) offers the following suggestions:
- Avoid salt on the road
- Allow extra space for reacting, slowing down, and stopping
- Wear appropriate layers
- Keep your bike maintained and tires properly inflated
- Don’t ride when temperatures are below freezing
These commonsense practices can help prevent your causing an accident, they may also provide additional time to respond to erratic or unexpected maneuvers being performed by vehicles around you. However, even the safest of motorcyclists cannot always avoid being injured when other drivers are behaving poorly.
