AAA estimates 47 million Americans will travel between July 3rd and 8th for the Fourth of July holiday - 39.7 of those by motor vehicle. WIll you be among them? Here are some steps to help you avoid causing or being involved in a car accident:
- Do not drink and drive. The IIHS reports that more people die in drunk driving related accidents on July 4th than any other day of the year.
- Do not smoke marijuana and drive. Marijuana, like alcohol, impairs your ability to drive. The Denver Post reports that fatal car accidents involving drivers who test positive for marijuana have doubled in Colorado since 2013.
- Put your phone down. Distracted driving takes nine lives every day. When traffic is excessive, the risk of causing or being injured in one of these accidents is significantly higher.
- Drive courteously. Aggressive driving plays a role in 56% of all fatal car accidents. There will be increased midweek traffic due to the holiday. Budget more time to get to your location, allow for a larger gap in between your car and the car in front of you, and keep your cool to avoid harming yourself or others.
Remember, no matter how courteous, sober, and attentive you may be, someone else’s actions may still cause you harm.
